Internet Browsers

Firstly, a browser is the general name for a program that can go on the intenet and display web pages on your computer.
I imagine most of you use Internet Explorer to surf the internet. This is a program designed by Microsoft and given away for free by downloading it from msn.com Its icon is a big blue e with a swirl around it.
However, it is not the only program you can use for internet surfing.

There are many others, the only other ones that I really know about and have used is Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox and Safari.
You can see a list in my IT Links page Netscape Navigator's icon is a lighthouse with a big swirl round it.
Go to its website and take a look.

Some people say it is a million times better than Internet Explorer.
There is also Mozilla Firefox which is a popular browser amongst IT people.
Safari is also the name of another browser used on Macs.
CRISIS DO NOT WANT YOU TO DOWNLOAD ANYTHING ONTO THESE PCS FOR SECURITY REASONS, SO PLEASE DO NOT DOWNLOAD NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR. YOU MIGHT WANT TO DO THIS AT ANOTHER PC.

In order to surf the internet you need to have at least one of these programs (called Browsers) installed on your computer. Almost all PC’s come with one of them installed. If you don’t have a browser on your PC then you can’t go on the internet to get one (you need a browser to go on the internet). You would have to copy the software onto a floppy disk or compact disk and install it onto your PC from that.

In this lesson I will attempt to show you things that will improve your ability to do things that people may not want you to do, however I will also go into things that will explain why they don’t want you to do it, and hope that you then respect and understand people’s wishes.
